Over the years I have covered a lot of topics, but a few of them definitely come up more than others.
The top three questions I get asked as an expert in pediatric sleep are:
1. How do I wean my baby from the bedtime bottle?
It’s recommended to start weaning the bottle at bedtime around the time your child turns one. Ideally the bottle would be completely gone before your child turns 15 months. That is when toddlers start to become much more attached to things. There are two main reasons to wean the bottle:
- It is not good for your child’s teeth if you aren’t brushing them after the milk.
- It is an unnecessary crutch at bedtime. The longer your baby takes the bottle at that time the harder it will be to break.
My blog on this topic always gets a lot of traffic. If this is something you need help with, you are not alone! Check it out to learn more about how to wean the bedtime bottle: How to Wean Your Baby From the Bedtime Bottle.
2. What do I do when my toddler tries to climb out of the crib?
I recommend that parents wait as long as possible before moving their child to a bed. Two-and-a-half is the youngest I recommend for making this switch, but most children will do better when they are three. If your child is younger than than two-and-a-half and has been climbing out of the crib, then you can read about a few things to try here: Climbing out of the Crib.
3. How do I get my child to sleep through the night?
This is the most common question I get. I don’t have a blog on it because it would be the longest blog ever. The answer is so different for different children. It’s important to take into account your child’s age, temperament, habits, and your own comfort levels with and commitment to changing those habits.
